Legislative Counsel
The Tennessee District Attorneys General Conference is seeking a highly skilled Legislative Counsel to join our team. This position plays a crucial role in monitoring legislative activities, analyzing proposed legislation, and serving as a key liaison to the Tennessee General Assembly and Administration. The Legislative Counsel will represent the interests of Tennessee District Attorneys in matters impacting criminal justice and public safety.
Key Responsibilities
- Legislative Monitoring: Track legislative actions, develop a watch list of proposed legislation impacting Tennessee District Attorneys, and ensure timely updates to the Conference leadership.
- Bill Analysis: Analyze proposed bills and amendments, assess their potential impact, and provide detailed reports to the Conference.
- Liaison Duties: Serve as the primary point of contact between the Tennessee District Attorneys General Conference, the Tennessee General Assembly, and Governor’s Office. Build and maintain strong working relationships with state senators, representatives, and their staff.
- Legislative Drafting: Draft proposed legislation that aligns with the mission and objectives of the Tennessee District Attorneys General Conference and our legislative package. Work closely with legislators and their staff to shape and refine bills.
- Committee Testimony: Represent the Conference in legislative committee hearings, providing expert testimony on bills and amendments as needed.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Collaborate with other stakeholders in the criminal justice and public safety community to ensure alignment on key legislative priorities.
- If in possession of a law license, other Legal Duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s Degree required. Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school and admission to practice law in Tennessee optional.
- Experience: Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in a legislative, policy, or legal role, ideally with direct involvement in criminal justice or public safety matters
- Skills:
- Strong knowledge of the Tennessee legislative process and government operations.
- Proven ability to analyze complex legislation and translate findings into actionable insights.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with an ability to engage effectively with legislators, government officials, and stakeholders.
- Strong drafting skills, with experience writing legislation and policy documents.
- Confident public speaker with the ability to provide testimony in front of legislative committees.
- Characteristics: Proactive, detail-oriented, and able to work independently in a fast-paced environment. Commitment to upholding the mission of the Tennessee District Attorneys General Conference and advancing criminal justice and public safety.
Compensation and Benefits
- Salary Range: $85,000 to $105,000, commensurate with experience.
